Military Child Education Coalition - Professional Development Opportunities

  • MCEC® offers learning opportunities for professionals including topics that enhance the understanding of the challenges of transition for military and veteran-connected students and provide recommendations for support. 

School Liaisons

  • School Liaisons can provide training and support to LEAs impacted by military installations. TEA encourages coordination with School Liaisons to help provide robust services for military-connected students.

Military Student Identifier

  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that Texas identify students with a parent who is an active-duty member of the Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserves.  This Military Student Identifier will allow educators and leaders to understand how military-connected children are performing in school.

Department of Defense (DoD) - Month of the Military Child

  • April is designated as the Month of the Military Child.  Purple is designated to be worn typically on April 15th to show support children of all branches of the military. 

Military K-12 Partners: A DoDEA Educational Partnership Program

  • DoDEA has awarded 321 grants since 2009 totaling over $400 million to support academic achievement and educational opportunities outcomes for military children. In the fiscal year of 2017, Texas received $2.35 million dollars.  Data gathered from these grant programs show that there are significant improvements in student achievement, increased professional development for teachers, enhanced social and emotional support for students.

Tutor.com

  • Military Families can access free tutoring and homework help online at no cost to active duty members and their eligible dependents.  Tutor.com offers help with homework, studying, test prep, proofreading, and more.

CO Commanding Officer n/a
DEERS Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System You must be enrolled in this to be eligible for benefits.
DEPLOYMENT n/a Assignment of Military personnel to temporary tours of duty. Can be weeks, months, or years of separation.  
DOD Department of Defense n/a
EFMP Exceptional Family Member Program Program for military dependents who need have special physical and or mental needs.
MISSION n/a The primary task of the military organization. 
MOBILIZATION n/a The assembling of forces in preparation for deployment.  The act of the President of the United States to bring members/units of the Guard and Reserve to active duty for National emergencies. 
MWR Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Comprehensive network of support and leisure services designed to enhance the lives of soldiers, their families, civilian employees, military retirees, and other eligible participants.
PCS Permanent Change of Station Reassignment to a different military installation. Typically happens every 2 to 3 years. 
SPONSOR n/a The husband, wife, parent, or the other guardian who is on active duty in the military.
TDY Temporary Duty Military member is temporarily assigned to a different duty station, may or may not involve travel.
UNACCOMPANIED/REMOTE TOUR n/a Permanent assignment of military personnel to a duty station without family members.
