English Language Arts and Reading TEKS Review

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has legislative authority to adopt the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each subject of the required curriculum. SBOE members nominated educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers to serve on the review committees. This page provides information regarding the 2015 review and revision of the English language arts and reading (ELAR) TEKS. New English and Spanish Language Arts and Reading TEKS Adopted by State Board of Education

Kindergarten–Grade 8

The State Board of Education (SBOE) gave final approval on May 10, 2017, to new English and Spanish language arts and reading TEKS for Kindergarten–8 to be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.

High School

The SBOE gave final approval on June 23, 2017, to new English and Spanish language arts and reading TEKS for high school. The new high school TEKS will be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2020-2021 school year.

The new K-12 TEKS are available on the TEA rules page with "Adopted 2017" in the title.

Vertical Alignment Document

The following vertical alignment document was created to reflect the alignment of the proposed revisions to the English language arts and reading TEKS across grade levels, Kindergarten – Grade 12. The SBOE requested that TEA staff apply adjustments made to the Kindergarten – Grade 8 TEKS at the January/February 2017 meeting to the proposed revisions to the high school TEKS as appropriate. The vertical alignment documents reflect these adjustments.
