2021-2022 Social Studies TEKS Review

The State Board of Education (SBOE) has authority for the review and adoption of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each subject of the required curriculum. SBOE members nominate educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers to serve on review work groups. This page provides information regarding the 2021–2022 review and revision of the TEKS for kindergarten-grade 12 social studies.

Social Studies Proposed Revisions to Chapter 113, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Social Studies, Kindergarten–Grade 12

The following documents reflect proposed revisions to the social studies TEKS that will be presented to the SBOE for first reading and filing authorization at a special meeting on September 26–27, 2022. The proposed revisions add social studies content required by Senate Bill (SB) 3, 87th Texas Legislature, Second-Called Session, 2021. The rule text documents for subchapters A, B, and C reflect changes to be considered by the SBOE. Additionally, these documents include comments (noted in yellow) that show the alignment of the current student expectations to the requirements of SB 3. The Senate Bill 3 side-by-side document provides a crosswalk between the requirements outlined in the bill and the proposed revisions.

SBOE Direction on Social Studies Framework
for Kindergarten – Grade 8

Social Studies TEKS Review Work Groups

The SBOE's process calls for separate work groups. Nominations to serve on TEKS review work groups will be made throughout the review process.

Work Groups

Throughout the revision process, applications are submitted to SBOE members for their review and approval. TEA then builds work groups from the pool of approved applicants and notifies selected applicants of their invitation to serve on a work group.

  • Work group members will be expected to complete an online orientation session prior to their work group meeting.
  • Work group members may be asked to complete pre-work exercises prior to their meeting.
  • Work group members may be asked to provide invited testimony at SBOE meetings.

Questions related to the application for the social studies TEKS review and revision process can be directed to teks@tea.texas.gov.
