2021-2022 Social Studies TEKS Review
The State Board of Education (SBOE) has authority for the review and adoption of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each subject of the required curriculum. SBOE members nominate educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers to serve on review work groups. This page provides information regarding the 2021–2022 review and revision of the TEKS for kindergarten-grade 12 social studies.
Announcements
K-12 Social Studies TEKS adopted by the State Board of Education
The SBOE gave final approval on November 18, 2022, to revisions to the social studies TEKS for kindergarten-grade 12. The revised TEKS will be effective on August 1, 2024, and implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.
The adopted revisions to 19 TAC Chapter 113, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Social Studies, Subchapter A, Elementary, Subchapter B, Middle School, and Subchapter C, High School, are available on the Adopted State Board of Education Rules – Not Yet Effective webpage.
Social Studies Proposed Revisions to Chapter 113, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Social Studies, Kindergarten–Grade 12
The following documents reflect proposed revisions to the social studies TEKS that will be presented to the SBOE for first reading and filing authorization at a special meeting on September 26–27, 2022. The proposed revisions add social studies content required by Senate Bill (SB) 3, 87th Texas Legislature, Second-Called Session, 2021. The rule text documents for subchapters A, B, and C reflect changes to be considered by the SBOE. Additionally, these documents include comments (noted in yellow) that show the alignment of the current student expectations to the requirements of SB 3. The Senate Bill 3 side-by-side document provides a crosswalk between the requirements outlined in the bill and the proposed revisions.

SBOE Direction on Social Studies Framework
for Kindergarten – Grade 8
At its April meeting, the SBOE provided additional direction to its work groups regarding recommendations for revision to the kindergarten – grade 8 TEKS.
These slides include an overview that was presented at the April 6, 2022 SBOE meeting. The following one-pager provides an overview of the proposed K-8 framework.
Social Studies TEKS Review Work Groups
The SBOE's process calls for separate work groups. Nominations to serve on TEKS review work groups will be made throughout the review process.
Work Groups
Throughout the revision process, applications are submitted to SBOE members for their review and approval. TEA then builds work groups from the pool of approved applicants and notifies selected applicants of their invitation to serve on a work group.
- Work group members will be expected to complete an online orientation session prior to their work group meeting.
- Work group members may be asked to complete pre-work exercises prior to their meeting.
- Work group members may be asked to provide invited testimony at SBOE meetings.
