Steps to Earn a Certificate of High School Equivalency

Follow these steps to earn your Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency:

step1 icon Choose a test:  GED or HiSET.  Which test series should you take?  Visit the At-a-Glance page for a side-by-side comparison.

step2 Try some sample test questions and practice tests: GED or HiSET.
Note: Practice tests are not required in Texas.

step3 Prepare to test. You can study on your own using books from the library and book store, or study online. Find an adult education program in your area by contacting TCALL at 800-441-READ (7323) or search online.
Note: Adult Education classes are not required in Texas.

step4 Register and schedule your test(s) online: GED or HiSET. All tests are taken at official testing centers.
Note: You do not have to take all the tests at once.

step5 Take the test(s). Once you pass the whole series, TEA will email you a PDF containing your certificate in just a few days.
