Self-Assessment

The purpose of the special education self-assessment is to assist Local Education Agency (LEA) leadership teams in evaluating and improving their educational program serving students with disabilities receiving special education services. The special education self-assessment is completed annually by all LEAs, regardless of RDA framework determinations, and is intended to engage leadership teams in proactively addressing special education compliance and support student performance.

Materials on this page are provided as resources to support LEAs with engaging effectively in the self-assessment process. The special education self-assessments are submitted annually in the Ascend Texas application in the Texas Education Agency Login (TEAL).

***Given the 2021 winter storm and the impact to local education agencies throughout the state, the Department of Review and Support will be extending the self-assessment submission deadline to June 1, 2021. Local Education Agencies will have from January 21, 2021 to June 1, 2021 to submit their self-assessment within Ascend Texas application.***

Due to COVID-19, the special education self-assessment will be released on January 21, 2021 within the Ascend Texas application. Once the self-assessment is open, LEAs have until April 30, 2021 to submit their self-assessment within Ascend. For the 2020-2021 school year, LEAs are required to complete seven prioritized areas of the self-assessment. These areas are:

  • Properly Constituted ARD
  • IEP Implementation
  • Child Find
  • Instructional Strategies
  • IEP Content and Development
  • Family Engagement
  • Secondary Transition

LEAs also have the option to complete all compliance/strategy items of the special education self-assessment in addition to the seven prioritized areas.
