Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program Requirement

In 2023, Senate Bill 2124 (88th Texas Legislature, Regular Session) was signed into law, establishing Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.029, Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program. The law requires Texas public school systems to develop an advanced mathematics program for middle school students that is designed to enable students to enroll in Algebra I in eighth grade.  

Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS

At the April 2025 meeting, the State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted reorganized Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for middle school advanced mathematics courses. These middle school advanced mathematics TEKS may be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2025–2026 school year and are currently posted on the Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS Review web page. Once the new TEKS have been filed with the Texas Register, the TEKS will be available in Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 111. 
 
The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS are optional standards that school systems are permitted but not required to implement to fulfill the middle school advanced mathematics requirement. The TEKS address all the knowledge and skills in the on-level middle school TEKS for grades 6–8 but have been reorganized and compacted to accelerate instruction. School systems may also create or continue to offer locally developed courses to implement the middle school advanced mathematics requirement but must ensure that students have the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency in all the middle school mathematics TEKS, grades 6–8. 

Middle School Advanced Mathematics Course Codes

The following course codes will be added to the Texas Student Data System Public Education Information Management System (TSDS PEIMS) data standards for school systems to report instruction using the middle school advanced mathematics TEKS. 

 Additional course codes will be added to the TSDS PEIMS data standards for school systems to report instruction in locally developed middle school advanced mathematics courses. The existing course code for Algebra I should be used for grade 8 students enrolled in Algebra I. 

School systems should continue using the existing course codes for on-level middle school mathematics instruction.
