2024 Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS Review
The State Board of Education (SBOE) has authority for the review and adoption of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each subject of the required curriculum. SBOE members approve educators, parents, business and industry representatives, and employers to serve on the review work groups.
In 2023, Senate Bill 2124 (88th Texas Legislature, Regular Session) was signed into law, establishing Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.029, Middle School Advanced Mathematics Program. The law requires school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to develop an advanced mathematics program for middle school students that is designed to enable students to enroll in Algebra I in eighth grade.
Middle School Advanced Mathematics TEKS, Adopted 2025
At the April 2025 meeting, the SBOE adopted TEKS for middle school advanced mathematics. The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS are the same knowledge and skills as the current mathematics TEKS for grades 6–8, which have been rearranged and compacted to accelerate instruction for students enrolling in Algebra I in eighth grade.
The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS may be implemented in classrooms beginning with the 2025–2026 school year. The new middle school advanced mathematics TEKS are available in 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 111, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics, Subchapter B, Middle School.

Draft Recommendations, November 2024
The middle school advanced mathematics TEKS review work group convened for a series of meetings in October. The work group was charged with developing recommendations for proposed TEKS to support middle school advanced mathematics programs designed to enable students to enroll in Algebra I in eighth grade. The SBOE directed the work group to develop two models based on existing models used by Texas public school districts. Additionally, the work group developed student expectation verification documents to verify that all current student expectations in grade 6–8 mathematics TEKS are addressed in each model.
The work group draft recommendations were posted for public feedback.
