Overview of STAAR Interim Assessments

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has created optional online interim assessments that align to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Test questions for the STAAR Interim Assessments are developed with Texas teachers and include some former STAAR items. These assessments will be available at no cost to districts and charter schools, and they are not tied to accountability.

What's new?

Due to STAAR cancellation, STAAR Interim Assessments for Opportunity 1 and Opportunity 2 tests will be available to districts and charter schools until May 29, 2020. Courtesy data files will continue to be provided. An updated schedule for data file postings is available in the Interim Assessments User Manual. As always, educators and school staff with access to TOMS can access student data reports in the Online Reporting Suite.

Please note that teachers must be granted access by their district to login to the Texas Assessments Management System.

Updates for the 2019–2020 school year

  • This year, new STAAR interim assessments will be available for science and social studies (in English and Spanish).
    • TEA is planning to only offer one testing opportunity and recommends that it is administered after the majority of TEKS have been covered, because unlike the TEKS for reading and math that tend to include similar skills over the grades but build in complexity, the science and social studies TEKS tend to contain discrete skills, facts, and concepts.
  • STAAR interim assessments for math and reading language arts (RLA) will continue to be available, but in order to ensure interims will continue to reflect the summative STAAR for reading language arts, there will be only one opportunity available for grades 3 through 8 reading and Spanish grades 3 through 5 reading during the 2019–2020 school year. This is because only overlap standards will be assessed in grades 3 through 8 at this time.
  • Refreshable braille and content and language supports in Spanish for the Spanish tests will now be available.

Districts can register students in the Texas Assessment Management System in the Online Reporting Suite.
