This page provides annual dropout data for all Grade 7-12 students by race/ethnicity, gender, economic status, program participation (bilingual or English as a second language, career and technical education concentrator, Early College High School, gifted and talented, Pathways in Technology Early College High School, Section 504, special education, Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and Title I), and other student characteristics (at-risk, dyslexia, emergent bilingual student/English learner, foster care, homeless, immigrant, migrant, military-connected, and overage). For campuses and districts, two sets of rates are provided: rates calculated for federal reporting purposes and rates calculated with statutory exclusions applied for state accountability. Please see the glossary for the reasons students may be excluded from campus and district rates. The Division of Research and Analysis masks some data to comply with federal regulations concerning student privacy, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Definition
The annual dropout rate is the percentage of students who dropped out of either Grades 7-8, Grades 9-12, or Grades 7-12 during the 2021-22 school year. In the 2005-06 school year, TEA began computing dropout rates according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) dropout definition. Therefore, annual dropout rates for 2004-05 and prior school years are not comparable to rates for 2005-06 and beyond. The Division of Research and Analysis presents rates for Grades 7-12 for all campuses. Although most campuses do not serve both Grades 7-8 and Grades 9-12, if a campus reports students in both grade spans, both rates appear regardless of the number of students served. The annual dropout rate formula is:
For more information on how annual dropout rates are calculated, please see reports on secondary school completion and dropouts in Texas public schools, published by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
