The links below provide access to grade-level retention data for Grades K-12 by race/ethnicity, gender, economic status, program participation (bilingual, career and technical education concentrator, English as a second language, gifted and talented, Section 504, special education, and Title I) and other student characteristics (at-risk, dyslexia, emergent bilingual student/English learner, foster care, homeless, immigrant, migrant, military-connected, and overage). The Division of Research and Analysis masks some data to comply with federal regulations concerning student privacy, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Definition

Comparing a student's grade level in the spring of one school year to the student's grade level in the fall of the next school year determines grade-level retention. The grade-level retention rate for 2021-22 is the percentage of students who attended in 2021-22 and were retained in grade in the fall of 2022. The grade-level retention rate equation is:

Grade-level retention rate equals the number of students enrolled in the same grade from one school year to the next divided by the number of students enrolled from one school year who return the next

Each file includes three worksheets that can be accessed using the tabs at the bottom of the workbook. In addition to the dataset, each workbook also provides an overview of the data as well as a data dictionary that defines the variable names in the dataset.
