The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is announcing updates to the 2026-2027 school year timeline for reporting certain data in the Texas Student Data System (TSDS) Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS). This does not impact any data reporting for the 2025-2026 school year.
Background
These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the accuracy and timeliness of student data reporting and ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements. This correspondence is a follow-up to changes announced in the September 3, 2024, To The Administrator Addressed correspondence.
To comply with Title I, Part A, Perkins V, and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act federal grant reporting requirements, TEA is required to report student enrollment, special education, dropout and graduate information and calculations based on these data to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) by January and February of each year. To reconcile prior year leavers and determine the current year enrollment status for students with disabilities, student enrollment and special education program information must be collected earlier in the school year. TEA teams consulted with other states and collaborated with school system PEIMS coordinators to analyze options and determine the most effective way to collect the data with the least impact on school systems. This advance notice is intended to ensure school systems are fully prepared.
Overview
TSDS allows data to be published into the Individual Operational Data Store (IODS) at the beginning of August each school year, enabling school systems to validate their data much earlier, which allows for a more near-real-time approach to reporting data. This also allows for a smoother transition to the updated timelines outlined below.
Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, a new PEIMS Fall Enrollment Submission will be added to collect:
- All students enrolled on the first Friday in October with their Special Education program determination, if applicable, and
- Students in grades 7-12 enrolled at any point during the school start window (first day of school through the last Friday in September).
The snapshot date for the PEIMS Fall Enrollment Submission will be the first Friday in October, and the submission will be due in mid-October. There will be no resubmission for the new PEIMS Fall Enrollment Submission.
Additionally, the existing PEIMS Fall Submission will be updated to include:
- ONLY students enrolled on the last Friday in October,
- School system budget, and
- Staff employed on the last Friday in October.
Impacts on Reporting
- School systems must adjust their internal timelines to meet the new reporting deadlines.
- Staff must familiarize themselves with the updated criteria for reporting data in the new PEIMS Fall Enrollment Submission to ensure accurate data submission.
Next Steps for School Systems
- Review the Updated Guidance: It is essential that all relevant staff review the Early Notice published in the TSDS Web-Enabled Data Standards (TWEDS) on March 3, 2025.
- Prepare for Early Submissions: Begin adjusting internal processes now to meet the new deadlines.
