Overview
Sentinel is the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) formal school safety system designed to collect, process, store and distribute school safety and security information. The purpose of this To the Administrator Addressed (TAA) correspondence is to formally announce the launch of the Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTA) module in Sentinel.
Required Reporting through Sentinel
On April 15, 2025, TEA officially launched the Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTA) Module in Sentinel for all Texas public school districts and open-enrollment charter schools. This user-friendly system supports compliance with Texas Education Code, §37.115, and 19 Texas Administrative Code, §103.1213 by providing a standardized process for documenting, managing and reporting behavioral threat assessments across the state. The launch follows a successful pilot program, and all school systems now have access to the tools and training needed to implement the module.
Beginning August 1, 2025, all school systems will be required to conduct and report all threat assessments in Sentinel.
To support implementation, TEA offers a variety of training and resources to help districts prepare:
- Sentinel Sandbox – A training environment to explore the system and practice workflows safely
- ESC Guided Trainings – In-person sessions offered statewide in May and June
- Virtual Training Series – Online sessions accessible through Sentinel
- Texas K-12 BTA Manual, Field Guide, and Templates – Practical tools to guide effective BTA practices
School systems are encouraged to visit the Sentinel BTA Module for important updates, including the next steps for school systems and training opportunities to support the creation of district and campus threat assessment teams. The dashboard will serve as your central BTA hub for resources, guidance and training.
