The Texas Education Agency Commissioner's Office provides leadership to schools, manages the state education agency, and provides coordination with the state legislature and other branches of state government as well as the U.S. Department of Education.

Commissioner of Education
Mike Morath, a member of the Dallas Independent School District's board of trustees, was appointed commissioner of education by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Dec. 14, 2015. Morath officially began serving in this job on Jan. 4, 2016.
Past Commissioners
This link provides a list of those who have served as the appointed commissioner of education since 1950. Prior to that time, the position was called the state superintendent of public instruction and was a statewide elected office.
