The Office of Educator Support is responsible for ensuring that Texas recruits, supports, and retains effective teachers and principals to serve the 5.5 million public school students in Texas and leads the agency’s work to improve low-performing schools across the state and to support districts in developing high-quality options.
The Office of General Counsel is responsible for providing legal counsel to the Commissioner, State Board of Education (SBOE), and the agency regarding a broad array of legal topics relating to the Texas Education Code (TEC), other state laws, and federal laws that relate to primary or secondary education.
The Office of Governance is responsible for improving the governance and overall system performance of local education agencies. This is accomplished through the coordinated efforts from three primary streams of work: Compliance and Investigations, Field Support, and Accreditation and Enforcement. The collaborative approach by these departments allows for a coalescence around the central tenet of supporting the educational progress and improving student outcomes in Texas public schools.
The Office of Operations is responsible for supporting many of the day-to-day functions, including direct support for the Commissioner, managing external relationships and communications, managing many internal cross-agency functions, coordinating TEA’s COVID response, and coordinating amongst and strategizing with the state’s 20 Education Service Centers (ESCs).
The goal of the Office of School Safety and Security is to build the capacity of the regional education service centers (ESCs) and local education agencies (LEAs) to promote the physical and psychological well-being of students and staff - recognizing that safer schools positively impact student outcomes. We align school safety and security expertise with guidance provided through technical assistance to ensure effective best practices are implemented across the state.
The Office of Special Populations and Monitoring (OSPM) has the responsibility of ensuring the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004, monitoring programs that receive federal and state funds, and funding technical assistance efforts through discretionary grants.
The Office of Information Technology (IT) works closely with all agency divisions to implement innovative technology solutions in a cost-efficient manner that supports the goals and priorities of the TEA and provides efficient technology solutions and stellar customer service to internal staff, Education Service Centers, and 1,200+public-school districts and charter schools.
