Discipline Data Products
A PEIMS record (44425 Disciplinary Action Sub-Category) is required for each disciplinary action taken against a student which results in the removal from any part of their regular classroom program. A single student can have multiple records if removed from the classroom more than once and a single incident can result in multiple actions. These data are required by TEC Chapter 37, and by IDEA 2004, which includes students who are receiving special education and related services.
Every disciplinary action that results in the removal of a student from any part of their regular academic program is categorized in one of the following general categories:
- In-School Suspension (ISS),
- Out-of-School Suspension (OSS),
- Expulsion,
- Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP), or
- Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) assignments.
The counts on these reports are generated independently at the state, region, and district levels, depending on the level requested. In general, if the heading name includes “students,” a student is counted once for the particular action or reason at the selected level. Otherwise, this is a count of action records, and students may be counted more than once.
The following report categories count students once:

NOTE: Ethnicity categories are American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, White, and Two or More Races.
In Section W – Reason Incident Counts, A disciplinary incident number is generated when an incident results in one or more disciplinary actions for one or more students. In some cases, a student may receive more than one disciplinary action for the same disciplinary offense resulting in a district submitting more than one record for the identical incident number.
A disciplinary incident number is counted once at the campus level. The counts at the state, region and district levels are created from the summation of the campus counts.
In Section X – Discipline Action Counts, For each discipline action code a total count of records is created for the selected level of state, region, or district. A student may have multiple records.
The Discipline Data Products are downloadable reports and files. The statistics in these products are extracted or calculated from the data collected through the Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS). They are grouped into four categories:
- Discipline Reports
- Discipline Action Group Summary Reports
- TAKS Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings
- STAAR Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings
Discipline Reports
The Discipline Reports provide overview of data for students in discipline settings and are available at the state, region, district or campus level. Beginning in the 2024–2025 school year, this report will consolidate all data from the Discipline Action Group Summary Reports.
Discipline Action Group Summary Reports
The Discipline Action Group Summary Reports provide counts of students and discipline actions by student categories and discipline action groups. Student categories include ethnicity, gender and economic status. Discipline action groups include in-school and out-of-school suspensions, placement at a DAEP or JJAEP, and expulsions. These reports are available at the state, region and district levels. Beginning with the 2024–2025 school year, this report will no longer be updated, and all related data will be consolidated into the Discipline Reports referenced above.
TAKS Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings
The Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings from school year 2005-2006 through school year 2010-2011 are based on the results of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), State Developed Alternative Assessment (SDAA) and SDAA II, TAKS (Accommodated), TAKS‑Modified, and TAKS‑Alternate tests. Since these tests were phased out after school year 2010-2011, the new reports are based on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), STAAR Alternate, and STAAR Modified tests results.
For school years 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, these reports contain data on students who took the primary administration of TAKS or SDAA/SDAA II and who received a disciplinary action of DAEP, JJAEP, or Expulsion Without Placement prior to the primary administration of TAKS. They are available only at the state level.
For school years 2007-2008 through 2010-2011, these reports contain data on students who took the primary administration of TAKS, TAKS (Accommodated), TAKS-Modified (TAKS-M), or TAKS-Alternate (TAKS-Alt) and who received a disciplinary action of DAEP, JJAEP, or Expulsion Without Placement prior to the primary administration of TAKS. They are available only at the state level.
STAAR Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings
STAAR was implemented in 2011-2012. Because performance standards were not set in time for the release of these reports, Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings are not available for 2011-2012.
For school years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014, the Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings contain data on students who took the primary administration of STAAR, STAAR EOC (End of Course), STAAR Modified, or STAAR Modified EOC, and who received a disciplinary action of DAEP, JJAEP, or Expulsion Without Placement prior to the primary administration of the tests. These reports are available only at the state level.
For school years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017 the Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings contain data on students who took the primary administration of STAAR or STAAR EOC, and who received a disciplinary action of DAEP, JJAEP, or Expulsion Without Placement prior to the primary administration of the tests. These reports are available only at the state level.
STAAR Assessment Reports for Students in Discipline Settings were discontinued after 2016-17 due to lower usage rates.
The Annual Summary Reports are available at the state, region, district level or campus level.
