Reports and Dashboards

The Accountability Research Unit in the Division of Research and Analysis publishes annual reports on grade-level retention in Texas public schools. Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, the format for the annual reports changed, and two separate annual reports were published. In 2019-20, the format of the report on grade-level retention rates was changed from a PDF report to an interactive data dashboard.

Reports and Dashboards for the 2010-11 School Year and Later Years

Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, the format of Accountability Research reports on grade-level retention in Texas public schools changed. Data for the 2010-11 school year and later years are presented in two separate annual reports, which are published sequentially, as the data become available. The reports cover grade-level retention by student characteristic and program participation, and grade-level retention and promotion with data on performance of students on the reading and mathematics state assessments. In 2019-20, the format of the report on grade-level retention rates was changed from a PDF report to an interactive data dashboard.

Reports for the 2009-10 School Year and Earlier Years

Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, the format of Accountability Research reports on grade-level retention in Texas public schools changed. Data for the 2009-10 school year and earlier years are presented in a single annual report. The report presents data on grade-level retention by student characteristic and program participation. In addition, student retention and promotion data are reported with data on performance of students on the reading and mathematics state assessments. A supplement to the report presents grade-level retention data at the district level.

The retention rate reported by the Texas Education Agency is an annual rate that shows the percentage of students who, in the fall of a given school year, were enrolled in the same grade level as reported for the last six-week period of attendance in the previous year.
