The Division of Curriculum science team provides direction and leadership to Kindergarten (K) through grade 12 science educators in Texas. The science staff does the following: 

  • Assists districts statewide with implementation of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for science

  • Facilitates the development and management of state-funded professional development programs

  • Collaborates with the Division of Student Assessment in the development of state science assessments

  • Assists the Division of Instructional Materials and Educational Technology (IMET) in overseeing the textbook adoption process for grades K-12 science instructional materials

  • Reviews state certifications related to science with the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC)

In addition, the science staff coordinates the Texas Environmental Education Advisory Committee (TEEAC), National Youth Science Camp (NYSC), and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Science staff also provides on-going communication with the field related to science curriculum and graduation requirements found in Texas Administrative Code (TAC).

Announcements

The National Science Foundation, under the direction of the White House, approves the Texas candidates as finalists for the national Presidential Awards for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST) award. If chosen as a national winner, the state finalists will receive $10,000 and an all-expense-paid trip for two to Washington D.C. for ceremonies that include recognition from the President of the United States. The nomination and application windows are expected to open in October/November for teachers who teach Grades 7-12, including AP Computer Science Teachers. Teachers may sign up to apply or be nominated for the award.

In Texas, eligible teachers who submit a completed application by May 1, 2017, will receive 20 CPE hours. For questions, contact your Texas State PAEMST Coordinators at tx_paemst@tea.texas.gov.

National Youth Science Camp 2016 Delegates Selected

Two outstanding students have been selected to represent Texas as delegates to the 2016 National Youth Science Camp. The National Youth Science Camp, one of the nation’s premier programs in secondary science education, is an annual summer forum where two delegates representing each state exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. Delegates who are chosen to represent each state must have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership in school and community activities, and a genuine interest in the sciences. The two Texas students selected are

  • Christopher Botello – a senior at John Jay High School (Northside ISD) and
  • Tony Liu – a senior at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science in Denton.

In addition to the two state delegates, four alternates were also selected. The four alternates for Texas include: Amy Ma of William B. Clements High School (Fort Bend ISD); Adriana Avendano of Young Women’s Leadership Academy (San Antonio ISD); Virginia Blackwell of the Texas Virtual Academy (Premier High Schools); and Benjamin Rubanov of the Plano West Senior High School (Plano ISD).

Statewide professional development opportunities on science topics are available now at regional education service centers (ESCs) and through the Texas Gateway.

Texas Regional Collaboratives (TRC) (outside source): The Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching support a network of K-16 partnerships to provide high-quality, sustained, and intensive teacher mentoring focused on strengthening science and mathematics content and pedagogy. This infrastructure of over 56 institutions of higher education collaborates with the Texas Education Agency, education service centers, school districts, and business partners.
