Candidates seeking election to the State Board of Education must follow the procedures for filing a statewide office with the Texas Secretary of State at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/index.shtml.

  • Duly elected members serve four-year and two-year terms. This system allows for staggered terms in which seven of the board’s seats are up for election every two years, except after redistricting when all seats are contested. SBOE districts are redrawn every 10 years.
  • The board chair is appointed every two years by the governor with approval from a majority of the Texas Senate. A board member may serve as chair for two consecutive two-year terms. After the 2 two-year terms, the member is not eligible to be named chair again until four years have passed.
  • The board elects a vice chair and secretary from among its members to serve two-year terms.
  • Board members may not hold other public offices. This also applies to candidates seeking election to the board.
  • Candidates seeking election must have lived in their SBOE district for at least one year as of election day.
  • Candidates must be registered to vote in their SBOE district.
  • Candidates must be at least 26 years old.
  • Registered lobbyists seeking election to the board and representing interests relevant to the board may not serve on the board.
