July 2016 Committee of the Full Board Wednesday Item 1

Comments from the Commissioner of Education and Commissioner of Higher Education Concerning College Readiness Issues

July 20, 2016

COMMITTEE OF THE FULL BOARD: DISCUSSION
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: NO ACTION

SUMMARY:
Commissioner of Education Mike Morath and Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund A. Paredes will discuss college readiness issues, including the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s 60x30TX strategic plan.

BOARD RESPONSE: Review and comment.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES: The commissioners of public education and higher education regularly work together on P-16 issues, such as college readiness efforts. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved a new strategic plan that calls for 60 percent of Texans aged 25-34 to earn a certificate or a college degree by 2030. Both the Texas Education Agency and the State Board of Education are currently working on new strategic plans that will establish long-term goals.

OTHER COMMENTS AND RELATED ISSUES: The committee will receive an update on the board’s Long-Range Plan for Public Education in a separate agenda item during the July meeting.
