Transition to Online Assessments

The Texas Legislature requires the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to investigate and develop a transition plan to administer all State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) tests electronically by 2022–2023. A fully electronic administration will level the playing field for students who need accommodations, expedite test results, reduce cost, and promote future innovations in assessments. The transition plan, due to the legislature by December 2020, is subject to legislative approval prior to implementation.

Update: The agency is working with stakeholders to put together resources and best practices to assist districts and campuses who are interested in transitioning online. STAAR Interim Assessments, used by 50% of districts last year, use the same online systems as STAAR and can help students and teachers familiarize themselves with the platform prior to summative testing.
