Required Physical Fitness Assessment 2014

Word Version

December 3, 2013

Subject:  Required Physical Fitness Assessment

The Texas Education Code, §38.101 and §38.103, requires that the fitness levels of all students in grades 3-12 enrolled in a physical education course or any substitute course or activity be assessed at least once annually and that school districts submit the results to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) each school year. The TEA identified Fitnessgram® as the assessment tool to be used by all school districts starting in the 2007-2008 school year.

The TEA has entered into an agreement with Human Kinetics to provide a statewide license to Fitnessgram 10 at no cost to schools. Districts and charter schools will be required to register with Human Kinetics for access to the district site license, which provides software access, an updated Fitnessgram test manual, and key code access to online Fitnessgram media.  Please visit for more information regarding Fitnessgram 10 and instructions for how to register for the site license.

Districts that elect not to take advantage of the Fitnessgram 10 site license will still be required to upload their fitness data to TEA. Districts may upload their data via the TEA’s Physical Fitness Assessment Initiative (PFAI) application. A TEASE account, user name, and password with PFAI access is required to upload data to the agency. Instructions for this process can be found at Please note that all PFAI data must be submitted no later than June 6, 2014.

Please note the following timeline for the submission of fitness data using either Fitnessgram 10 or the PFAI application.

• February 2, 2014—Fitnessgram 10 and PFAI systems are scheduled to open for uploading all fitness data
• February 5, 2014—The TEA will host a Texas Education Telecommunications Network (TETN) video conference related to the required physical fitness assessment.
• June 6, 2014—all fitness data must be submitted on or before this date; Fitnessgram 10 and PFAI systems will be closed for data submission after this date.
