Motivating Kindness

Lewis Elementary School’s physical education teacher, Stephanie Warner, has always made it her top priority to build relationships with her students and their families. As everyone moved into uncharted territory during this public health crisis, Coach Warner knew she needed to keep Forney ISD’s students, families, and staff motivated and committed to maintaining their personal health and safety on a daily basis.

Every Monday, Coach Warner hosts “Motivation Monday” on the Lewis Leopard PE page, where she posts different activities to encourage students to go outside, get creative, and be active.

“During this time of so much uncertainty, I try to give my viewers activities to bring joy to the household, help keep positive mindsets, and remind them about their healthy lifestyle choices,” said Coach Warner.

The activities Coach Warner posts gives students the opportunity to participate in physical activity while also stretching their imagination and supporting social and emotional learning. One such activity prompted students to draw inspirational messages on the sidewalk while they were out for fresh air and exercise to motivate others as they passed by those spots.

“One thing my students and I work on daily is respect towards each other. And, how far a simple kind act can go,” she shared. “Just because we are not physically in the gym doesn't mean we should stop focusing on the same [effort]!”

Not only is Coach Warner motivating her students, she also has encouraging words for other teachers during this time.

“Some advice I would share is to simply be the light! Not everything will always be perfect. Technology can provide us with plenty of frustration and disappoint sometimes. But we have to be fluid with the situation. Be consistent and keep on spreading joy!”
