Brownsville businessman Ruben Cortez, Jr. is the District 2 State Board of Education member.
A Democrat, Cortez was first elected to the State Board of Education in November 2012 and re-elected to a four-year term in 2014 and 2018. Cortez served as secretary of the board from February 2015 through January 2019.
Cortez serves on the board’s Committee on School Initiatives, which oversees agenda items related to charter schools, State Board for Educator Certification rules, and the appointment of school board members for districts located on military bases. He also served on the board's Ad Hoc Committee on the Long-Range Plan for Public Education.
Cortez has served on numerous board and commissions over the past years.
Among his education-related appointments, Cortez is a former member of the Brownsville Independent School District board of trustees. During his tenure on the board, Cortez served on the budget, legislative, internal audit, policy, curriculum and instruction, technology and dropout prevention committees.
He has also served on the Council of Urban Boards of Education, the national prekindergarten legislative committee for the National School Board Association, as chair of the Federal Relations Network Stipend Committee for the Texas Association of School Boards’ Board of Directors and on the TASB legislative committee. He current serves as vice chair of the Region One Education Service Center Board of Directors.
Cortez represent citizens in the counties of: Aransas, Calhoun, Cameron, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Kenedy, Kleberg, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Victoria, Wharton, Willacy and parts of Hidalgo.
