Up for the Challenge

Up for the Callenge

Don Bell, of Dimmitt, Texas always knew that he wanted to coach and teach. For 30 plus years, he had done just that by serving as a coach to students and teaching in wood shop. But it wasn’t until 2015 when Mr. Bell was approached by Dimmitt ISD, that he ever considered robotics to be his next venture. If life had taught him anything, it was that a challenge is always a good thing.

After accepting the challenge, the Richardson Elementary School ACE Robotics team of Dimmitt has excelled to new heights. This year, students are learning to build, program, and control the Lego EV3 Mindstorm robot. The teams have also competed in several robotics contests at Texas Tech University in Lubbock—an exciting experience for the students.

Mr. Bell states that he is thrilled to be able to introduce robotics to the elementary students and hopes to continue this endeavor next year. “Although, I am excited to watch the students learn new technology,” he said. “I am most excited that these students now have the vision to see what they can accomplish.” Someday he knows these kiddos will change the world of technology.
