Summer Opportunity for Texas Educators

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will host Teacher Institutes this summer for mathematics, reading/language arts, science, and social studies. Highly qualified Texas educators are encouraged to apply to participate. Participants will gain a strong understanding of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) program and how it aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

The 2019 Teacher Institutes will address the following subjects and grade levels.

  • English language arts and reading for grades 3-8 and English I and II
  • Mathematics for grades 3–8 and Algebra I
  • Science for grades 5 and 8 and Biology
  • Social Studies for grade 8 and U.S. History Studies
  • Spanish language arts and reading for grades 3-5

TEA is looking for classroom teachers and curriculum experts with current experience and qualifications in the following:

  • Classroom teaching experience or instructional coaching in one of the grade levels and subjects listed above
  • Working with English learners and students with disabilities
  • Participation/leadership in activities beyond what is required in the classroom (for example, district- or campus-level curriculum writing, data analysis, district-level common assessment writing, etc.)

The week-long Teacher Institutes will be held in Austin, Texas. Travel, lodging, and meal expenses related to participation in an institute will be covered. Teachers will also receive a stipend. Applicants should be prepared to participate in up to one-half day of training prior to the institutes.

Week 1 for reading/language arts and social studies is scheduled for July 8–12, 2019. This institute will focus on the recently revised TEKS, which will be implemented in the 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 school years. The institute will include activities related to understanding the recent revisions and providing feedback on assessment of the revised standards in future school years.

Week 2 for mathematics and science is scheduled for July 15–19, 2019. This institute will include training and activities related to item development and data analysis.

Participants in the 2019 Teacher Institutes will be selected as applications are received and until all available slots are filled. The earlier an application is received, the greater the opportunity for participation, and only applications submitted by May 31 will be considered for the 2019 institutes. Individuals who are selected to attend one of the institutes will receive an email invitation by June 15, 2019. Use the link below to complete an application to participate in the Teacher Institutes. For consideration for selection for the 2019 Teacher Institutes, please select Teacher Institutes from the committee drop-down menu in the Committee Preferences section of the application.
