State Secures Waiver Extension
The U.S. Department of Education extended the state's waiver from specific provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act through the 2014-2015 school year, pending approval of the agency's proposal for new teacher and principal evaluation and support systems.

Commissioner Williams seeks extension of ESEA waiver, and extends teacher, principal evaluation, and support systems pilot.
Commissioner of Education Michael Williams sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan seeking an extension of the state’s waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). In the letter, he also notified Secretary Duncan that the state would be adding an additional year to the pilot program for the new teacher and principal evaluation and support systems.

TEA Submits Final Guidelines for Teacher and Principal Support Systems to ED
Following its ESEA Waiver, the TEA submitted final guidelines for new teacher and principal evaluation systems, including multiple performance measures, to the US Department of Education (outside source).
The Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) is a new teacher evaluation system being piloted during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years.
The Texas Principal Evaluation and Support System (T-PESS) is a new principal evaluation system being piloted during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years.

Many organizations, districts and individuals are helping to pilot the Texas Evaluation and Support System (TESS).
Educator appraisal in Texas is governed by both statute and regulation.
