TAKS Reading Assessments
TAKS measures a student’s mastery of the state-mandated curriculum, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). TEA administers the reading TAKS for grades 3–9 in English and grades 3–5 in Spanish.

TEA uses TAKS reading rubrics to score the three short answer questions included on the reading test at Grade 9 and the English language arts tests at Grades 10 and 11 Exit Level. TEA scores short answer questions on a four-point scale, with 0 (Insufficient) being the lowest score and 3 (Exemplary) being the highest. There are three separate reading rubrics—one to score the question attached to the literary selection, one to score the question attached to the expository selection, and one to score the question that requires students to make a connection between these two selections. TEA bases the score students receive on each question on their ability to provide a reasonable answer and support it with relevant and accurate evidence from the text.

To help clarify the way TEA scores TAKS short answer responses, two charts are available below. The first applies to questions related to either a literary or an expository selection. The second is unique to questions connecting the literary and expository selections (also called crossover items). The charts are a "short-hand" way to capture the essence of the rubrics, but these charts are not a replacement of the rubrics.
