The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) online tutorials, practice tests, and operational assessments are available through the STAAR Online Testing Platform. The tutorials and practice tests are designed to provide opportunities for students and staff to familiarize themselves with the online testing environment and embedded tools. It is expected that all students participating in an online test administration complete the tutorials and practice tests prior to taking the assessment.
The tutorials are the first step for students to learn about the online testing environment. The tutorials show students how to navigate through the test, respond to the different question types, and access the available tools. In addition, short videos illustrate how to use the various features and tools. [NOTE: Videos do not have sound except for the Speak and Audio videos, which only read aloud the text on the screen.] Tutorials are available for various grades/subjects and courses.
The practice tests are the second step for students to learn about the online testing environment. The practice tests are released STAAR test forms that have been previously administered. These tests provide students with an opportunity to interact with the test interface, respond to questions, and locate and use available tools. Practice tests are available for various grades/subjects and courses.
The STAAR Online Testing Platform operates through a secure browser that must be installed on a desktop or tablet in order to access the tutorials, practice tests, and operational assessments. Links to the secure browsers are available at https://www.texasassessment.com/technology/. For a complete listing of supported operating systems and hardware requirements see the Unified Minimum Systems Requirements for the Administration of Online Assessments document, available at https://www.texasassessment.com/technology/. Once installed on iOS, Chromebooks, and Android, secure browsers will automatically update as necessary, if automatic updates are enabled. For Windows, Mac, and Linux, districts that installed the STAAR Online Testing Platform Secure Browser prior to February 6, 2017, must uninstall the previous version of the secure browser and install the latest version.
The STAAR tutorials and practice tests are open to the public. The STAAR operational assessments are only available during scheduled testing days and can only be accessed with secure login information.
