SBOE chair to participate in Federal Commission on School Safety Listening Panel

AUSTIN – State Board of Education Chair Donna Bahorich will participate in the Federal Commission on School Safety (FCSS) listening session in Montgomery, Alabama on Aug. 28.

The commission is gathering information about how to improve school safety. Over the past few months, the commission has held listening sessions in Lexington, Kentucky, Washington, D.C, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The upcoming session will be held from 1- 6 p.m. at the Alabama State Capitol – Old Archives Room, located at 600 Dexter Ave. in Montgomery.

The listening session will be divided into three sessions with state and local representatives, as well as commission members, discussing safety issues on the first two panels. Bahorich will participate in panel 2 from 2:15-3:15 p.m.

“I am honored to participate in the listening session. Nothing is more important to parents than keeping our children safe. By sharing school safety ideas, we can find ways to improve security on our campuses,” said Bahorich, who heads the 15-member elected state education board.

The third panel is reserved for comments from the public. Public testimony registration is now open.  Written comments may also be sent to safety@ed.gov.

The listening session will be livestreamed.
