Coaching Math Winners
Galveston Independent School District eighth grade math teacher Bryan Curran has transformed his math students into winners. As the Central Middle School boys’ basketball coach and mathematics instructor, Coach Curran listens intently to his students and works hard on and off the court to provide rigorous instruction to his Algebra I classes and mentor his athletes in the basketball program.
“I am committed to my students, and my mission is to educate, engage and empower each of them for a life of excellence in everything they do,” said Curran. Anytime you enter his classroom, you will see him interacting with students or working with them in small groups. His classroom is student-centered to ensure everyone understands the expectations of being engaged with the math lessons.
Curran also provides after-school tutorials for students with challenges to ensure they succeed. He uses Kahoot, Scavenger Hunt and Dance Revolution programs to help them reach solutions to mathematic problems. “I respect my fellow teachers and insist the students bring their best attitude and effort to class each day,” said Curran. “I treat them with respect, challenge their thinking through an inquiry approach and am always prepared to deliver high-quality instruction.” #IAmTXEd Galveston ISD
