Statement of Commissioner Michael Williams regarding 2013 Broad Prize winner Houston ISD

AUSTIN--Commissioner of Education Michael Williams today issued the following statement regarding the Houston Independent School District receiving the national 2013 Broad Prize for Urban Education:

"Congratulations to the Houston Independent School District for once again shining a spotlight on the successes in Texas public education. The Broad Prize reflects the day-to-day commitment of HISD educators, staff and administrators to student achievement. Any time a Texas district or campus receives national accolades, it reflects positively on our efforts as a state. However, the real prize in education comes in the classroom success of every student every day and every year. It’s that success that assures a brighter future for our communities and our state."

The Houston ISD is the only district in the country to win this prestigious national award twice. Given by The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, the award recognizes a large urban school district that has made the greatest improvement in student achievement in recent years.
