AUSTIN – Commissioner of Education Mike Morath announced today that Kara Belew will serve as Deputy Commissioner of Finance for the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
In this position, Belew will be responsible for overseeing three key divisions within the TEA: the Permanent School Fund; School Finance; and Agency Finance. The Deputy Commissioner of Finance will report directly to the Commissioner and serve as a key advisor on the senior leadership team.
“Kara brings a tremendous amount of experience to this critical position in the agency,” said Commissioner Morath. “Kara also shares my commitment of effectively utilizing taxpayer dollars to assure we are supporting students and educators in classrooms across our state.”
Belew previously served as the Statewide Budget Director for Gov. Abbott. During her tenure, she helped to pass legislation creating the Governor’s high quality prekindergarten and University Research Initiative programs. In addition, Belew formerly served as Gov. Rick Perry’s Director of Financial Accountability and Senior Education Advisor.
Belew graduated with honors from Southern Methodist University with degrees in Accounting and Political Science. After graduation, she worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, L.L.P., as a Senior Associate/C.P.A. on public accounts. Belew earned her law degree with honors from the University of Texas Law School and went on to serve a two-year law clerkship with the Supreme Court of Texas.
Belew currently serves on the Board and is the former Chairwoman of A Community for Education (ACE), a non-profit dedicated to ensuring economically disadvantaged children are reading at grade level before third grade. She is also active in numerous community organizations including the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association and the Austin Symphony League.
