Courses approved through the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) review process first became available for grades 9-12 in January 2009. Per Texas Education Code (TEC) Chapter 30A, TxVSN online courses can be provided by a Texas independent school district or open-enrollment charter school, regional Educational Service Centers (ESCs), and public or private institutions of higher education. TxVSN Provider Districts are responsible for instruction. Courses must meet the definition of an online (electronic) course and eligibility requirements outlined in TEC Chapter 30A.
Students in grades 9-12, younger than age 21, and eligible to attend public high school in Texas are eligible to take courses through the TxVSN. Eighth grade students who are ready to advance into high school courses are also eligible.
TxVSN Provider Districts submit highly-interactive high school courses developed locally or acquired through a third party to the TxVSN for review.
Course Review of electronic courses to be offered through the network is conducted by TEA’s partner for the TxVSN, ESC Region 10. Courses are reviewed to ensure they align with the state curriculum requirements, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, as well as the iNACOL National Standards of Quality for Online Courses (PDF). Approved courses meeting state graduation requirements are added to the TxVSN course catalog and become available to students across the state through the network’s centralized student enrollment system.
Course instructors are teachers who are Texas-certified in the course subject area and grade level or meet the credentialing requirements of an institution of higher education. All instructors are required to meet the professional development requirements of the network for effective online instruction prior to teaching for the network and must demonstrate mastery of the iNACOL National Standards of Quality for Online Teaching (PDF).
