Long-Range Planning Efforts for Texas Public Schools

COMMITTEE ON SCHOOL INITIATIVES: DISCUSSION
STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: NO ACTION

SUMMARY: 
The committee will discuss long-range planning efforts underway by various education groups and possible future planning options for the State Board of Education.

STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Texas Education Code (TEC), §7.102(c).

BOARD RESPONSE:  Review and comment.

PREVIOUS BOARD ACTION:  During the January 2014 State Board of Education meeting, the Committee on School Initiatives heard about long-term issues facing Texas public schools from representatives of the Texas High Performance Schools Coalition and from a six-member panel representing the state’s Education Service Centers. The committee received an update on the Long-Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020 at its July 2013 meeting.

FUTURE ACTION EXPECTED:  The committee will discuss whether the committee or the board should engage in long-term planning efforts.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND SIGNIFICANT ISSUES:  The State Board of Education, with assistance from the Texas Education Agency staff, periodically produces a Long-Range Plan for Technology and a Long-Range Plan for Public Education.

FISCAL IMPACT:  Unknown at this time.

PUBLIC COMMENTS:  None.
